Wound Care: Understanding Wound Care Products

With thousands of wound products available to choose from, it is important for the clinician to understand what a wound product is designed to do and how it will achieve this, when it is not appropriate to use a particular product and when it is appropriate to change the wound management including wound product.

This understanding will lead to better and more cost effective patient care. The workshop will focus on wound products in relation to wound aetiology and wound shape and the overall objectives of wound care.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognise wound dressing products to be use according to their function
  • Be able to apply wound care products to contoured body areas
  • Recognise when it is time to change the wound management plan
  • Recognise when it is time to refer the patient for further assessment and/or assistance

Wound Care: Negative Pressure Wound Therapy

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) also known as Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC)

This session will focus on how NPWT works, which types of wounds benefit most from NPWT and what factors increase a patient’s risk for adverse events with NPWT.

Learning objectives:

  • Recognise the different ways to apply NPWT in a safe a manner for the patient and staff
  • Recognise when it is not safe to use NPWT
  • Be able to apply NPWT to an uncomplicated and complicated wound shape.

This will be a hands-on workshop where you will get to participate in practicing the application of NPWT.

Lead with Confidence: Psychosocial Risk Management – practical tips

In this presentation, we will explore the common psychosocial risks that face the NSW healthcare sector. We will discuss the impact on your own health and safety as workers as you undertake the sometimes challenging task of managing people in a health system that is under pressure.

We will also unpack what you can do practically to help ensure psychosocial risks for your staff are minimised and hold those with power accountable to make meaningful changes.

About our presenter – Dr Peta Miller:
Dr Miller is a respected human factors professional with over 40 years of experience leading national and jurisdictional work health and safety (WHS) strategy, policy and practice, research and evidence translation.

Of note for our audience, she led the development of the first Australian Code of Practice on Managing Psychosocial Hazards at Work for SWNSW in 2021 and the 2024 SafeWork NSW Work Design to Manage Psychosocial Risk Guide. She was the immediate past chair of the Action Against Violence in NSW Hospital.

As someone who has worked in the health care system and with two sisters still working as nurses and midwives, she is passionate about making the health care sector healthier and safer.

Medications: How we do it better

This course focuses on medications in practice and what we can do as individuals to increase the safety of the people in our care. To explore the various causes of medication errors and provide you with the understanding and ability to help prevent medication errors from occurring in your workplace.

  • Professional Obligations and Scope of Practice – what are your responsibilities and accountability with regards to delegation, supervision and medications;
  • Clinical decision making;
  • The processes of the medication cycle and the stages that errors can occur;
  • Revisit the principles of medication administration and unpack the areas that commonly have presented errors;
  • Provide the importance of following policy and processes to maintain safety within the health care environment;

Lead with Confidence: Mandatory Notifications

Mandatory notifications are at times hard to navigate as a manager. Join our webinar to break down mandatory notifications so you understand the law and how it applies to you as a nurse and/or midwife.

This webinar will explore what concerns might trigger a mandatory notifications, different thresholds, and reasonable belief and be delivered by NSWNMA Legal Officer, Katherine Doust.

Katherine was registered as nurse 1980 and a midwife in 1983. She worked as a registered nurse and a midwife for approximately 18 years. Katherine is no longer registered or practicing as a nurse/midwife.

In 2000, Katherine was admitted as a solicitor and barrister of the Supreme Court of NSW.

After admission, Katherine worked in private legal practice for approximately 10 years practicing mainly in the areas of civil litigation, criminal law, personal injury, guardianship law and coronial inquiries.

In 2010, Katherine commenced working as a legal officer at the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association where she now advises and represents the Association’s members in matters including Coronial inquiries, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearings, and matters before the Nursing and Midwifery Council of NSW.

Mental health nursing refresher course

This course is designed for nurses who work in and/or those with an interest in the mental health setting.

Nurses who who want to refresh their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the philosophy and theory underpinning psychiatric care and to enhance their ability to deliver more effective and personalised interventions are encouraged to attend.

The primary objective is to be able to provide evidence-based, person-centred care that contributes to the overall well-being and recovery journey of individuals facing mental health challenges.

Upon completion of this course, clinicians will be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Understand contemporary mental health nursing philosophy, including Recovery-Oriented Principles and Trauma-Informed Care.
  • Identify various mental illnesses and their presentations, signs, and symptoms, including Personality Disorders and Dual Diagnosis.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive and holistic approach to the initial assessment and management of a person with mental illness, including psychosocial assessment, history-taking, therapeutic engagement, Mental State Examination, Mental Health Act, and the implications for nursing care. This includes the concept of risk, risk assessment and management, as well as psychological and pharmacological management strategies.
  • Focusing on/learning/understanding the essential elements for recognising and responding to deterioration in a person’s mental state.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence and recognise culturally specific approaches to care by incorporating cultural beliefs and cultural safety into aspects of practice.
  • Adopt approaches to collaborative care delivery by partnering with lived and living experiences (consumers, peer workers, family/carers, and other supporters).
  • Practice self-care.

This course will be presented by a credentialled mental health nurse with extensive experience in both the clinical and academic mental health field.
