Bathurst campaigns to stop cuts

NSW Nurses & Midwives Association (NSWNMA) members at Bathurst Hospital will hold a special branch meeting today to plan their response to the State Government’s decision to close five beds in the hospital’s medical ward from December 9.

The NSWNMA is concerned that other vital hospital and health services will be cut in the Bathurst region in the months ahead, as the NSW Government tries to save money in the local health budget at the expense of services and the associated nursing and midwifery jobs.

NSWNMA general secretary Brett Holmes said the situation is now so uncertain and detrimental to the community’s wellbeing that it is emerging as a major issue ahead of the 2015 state election.

“I understand our Bathurst branch will today discuss the implementation of a comprehensive community campaign over this issue, unless it is resolved – and resolved quickly – to the local community’s satisfaction,” Mr Holmes said.
