NSWNMA statement on Bondi Beach terror attack

The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) expresses our deepest sorrow to the entire Jewish community, following the horrific mass shooting at Bondi Beach.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends who’ve lost loved ones, and the dozens of victims who remain in hospital.

Our hearts break for the tragic and senseless loss of innocent lives during what was a celebration of warmth and happiness on the first night of Hanukkah.

The effects of this unimaginable act of terror are being felt deeply by not only the local community but the whole country.

We acknowledge the nurses and healthcare workers who are working tirelessly to save the lives of victims and assist with their trauma. We thank them for the critical role they play in treating the wounded and providing support to victims’ families with kindness, compassion and professionalism.

Our thoughts are with all first responders particularly police and paramedics, who displayed extraordinary courage to prevent further loss of life.

We also recognise the many brave bystanders who ran towards the danger, acting to protect others and render assistance. These acts demonstrate the values we celebrate as nurses, midwives and carers; empathy, compassion and care which knows no borders or religion.

We stand against bigotry and hatred, we condemn antisemitism in all its forms, and we stand for peace and unity.

At this time, we must come together in solidarity, love and support for each other – all members and all communities.
