More than ever, nurses and midwives need to join their union to organise and campaign for a better future. With collective strength, we can bring about positive change in our workplaces and our society. Strong unions are essential to a fair economy and a vibrant democracy.
As an aged care nurse, I feel privileged to be part of the mighty NSWNMA and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF). Aged care union members have an unwavering spirit of resilience and courage, and we have kept up the fight for safe quality care for our vulnerable residents. We have not given up, despite the challenges that have come our way.
I acknowledge the tireless support of our NSWNMA and ANMF officers in what has been an arduous journey to fix the aged care sector. We’ve had 20 aged care reviews and inquiries in the past 20 years, culminating in the Aged Care Royal Commission.
We have been supported every step of the way by our union through education and encouragement.
Finally, we have been vindicated, with an acknowledgement that staffing ratios should be introduced to ensure sufficient staffing in aged care.
