All interviews are conducted as a District. Prior to your interview we will ask you which program, stream, and clinical preferences you prefer.

  • 12-month program
  • Permanent fulltime (38-hour p/w) and part-time (32-hour p/w) positions
  • Opportunity to complete Clinical Honours with UTAS while working part-time.
  • Opportunity to complete Research Honours Qualification with The University of Sydney while you work part-time. Includes a $10,000 scholarship. This enables nurses to continue into PhD without completing a Masters.

Balmain Hospital

  • March intake
  • Specialist program on aged care, rehabilitation, and leadership development
  • 2 x 6-month rotations. The Rehabilitation ward and two Aged Care wards.
  • 4-day orientation
  • 6 days supernumerary in the clinical area

Canterbury Hospital

  • March intake
  • 2 x 6-month rotations
  • Streams offered: general nursing in medical, surgical and aged care medical. Specialty streams in emergency, operating suites, paediatric, intensive coronary care unit. Metro/rural exchange – 6-months in SLHD and 6-months in WNSELHD, mental health/general health exchange.
  • 4-day orientation
  • 6 days supernumerary in the clinical area

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

  • February, March, and May intakes
  • Rotations: General stream – 2 x 6-month placements • Peri-operative stream – 1 x 6 month and 2 x 3-month placements
  • Streams offered: General Nursing – Highly specialised and technical medical and surgical wards including Intensive Care unit (ICU), transplant, colorectal, upper GI, aged care, medial assessment, palliative care, paediatrics, renal and dialysis. Peri-operative program – perioperative unit, endoscopy, Institute of Rheumatology and Orthopaedics and opportunity to rotate in aesthetic and recovery departments. Cardiac Nursing – Coronary Care and cardiology wards. Metro/rural exchange – 6-months in SLHD and 6-months in WNSELHD, mental health/general exchange.

Concord Hospital

  • February and March intakes
  • 2 x 6-month placements
  • Streams offered:
    • General Nursing:
      • Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Operating Suite, Coronary Care Unit, medical wards, surgical wards, specialist aged care medical wards.
    • Perioperative Nursing
      • Anaesthetics, Scrub/Scout, Recovery and Day of Surgery Unit.
      • Metro/Rural exchange – 6-months SLHD, 6-months WNSWLHD.
    • Critical Care
      • Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Burns Unit and Coronary Care Unit.
    • Aged Care & Rehabilitation
      • Acute Aged care, Rehabilitation and Psychogeriatrics.
    • Cancer:
      • Haematology, Oncology and Ambulatory Cancer Unit.
    • General-Mental Health Nursing exchange
      • Mental Health and General Acute
  • 4-day orientation
  • 6 days supernumerary in the clinical area

Drug Health Services

  • February intake
  • 12-month program: 1 x 5-month inpatient unit placement, 1 x 5-month outpatient service placement, 2 months in specialty services.
  • Facility options: RPA, Concord Hospital, Canterbury Hospital, Redfern Health Centre, Croydon Health Centre, or Marrickville Health Centre.
  • Streams offered: drug/health nursing, mental health/drug health exchange
  • 5 days face-to-face orientation (including 2 days for Drug Health)
  • 6 days supernumerary in the clinical area

Sydney District Nursing

  • February intake
  • Community Health program at one of the following Marrickville Health Centre, Redfern Health Centre, Croydon Health Centre, Concord Hospital or Canterbury Hospital
  • Focuses on a range of complex clinical skills including post-surgical and chronic and complex wound care, chronic respiratory and cardiac care, continence care including catheter management, hospital in the home intravenous therapy, medication and drain management and palliative care
  • Structured orientation program — 3 weeks skills assessment, on-the-job learning, online learning, and a clinical skills teaching day.

Mental Health Services

  • February intake
  • 12-month program
  • Streams offered: Mental Health Nursing Mental Health/General Exchange Mental Health/Drug Health Exchange
  • Rotations include 3 x 4-month placements (1 x acute, 2 x other specialties). Mental Health / General Exchange: 2 x 6-month placements (1 x Mental Health and 1 x medical/ surgical in acute hospital ward). Mental Health / Drug Health Exchange: 2 x 6-month placements (1 x Mental Health and 1 x Drug Health ward)
  • Structured orientation program: 15 dedicated study days, Active preceptorship, 4-day Personal Safety and Aggression Management Training

  • 12 Month rotation through the SLHD International Quarantine services for NSW Health
