The New South Wales Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) in association with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation New South Wales Branch (ANMF NSW Branch) seeks an Industrial Officer to join our Member Rights Centre (MRC) on a temporary full-time basis.
You will be working for a highly respected association and one of the strongest and largest unions nationally. We have a successful track record of being a strong advocate for our members which is evident by our year-on-year membership growth.
About the role:
We are recruiting for an experienced Industrial Officer to join us on a full-time temporary basis for 12 months. You will join our Member Rights Centre team, providing advice, representation and support on industrial matters to our members in the nursing and midwifery professions. Our industry is very purpose-driven, and the nature of this work is very rewarding and will contribute to the development and implementation of NSWNMA’s strategic plan.
We are looking for a self-starter and someone who brings a high level of initiative to manage a range of complex matters. You will be a strong communicator, bring good negotiation skills and be able to influence positive outcomes for our members. The role is based at our Waterloo office, but travel is required, and it is essential for candidates to hold a current driver’s licence.
In this role you will:
Progress industrial relations matters to provide expert support, advice and representation to members and support NSWNMA colleagues in the following broad areas:
- Application of industrial instruments
- Industrial advocacy in tribunals
- Industrial research, advice and negotiation
To be considered for this position you require:
Essential:
- Demonstrated commitment to strive for the advancement of nurses and midwives and their professions.
- Thorough working knowledge of contemporary industrial relations legislation and practices and adaptability to changing legislative regimes.
- Specific knowledge and preferably experience in the negotiation of collective agreements and tribunal advocacy.
- Developed negotiation, advocacy and representation skills.
- Experience in program/project development, implementation and evaluation ability including co-ordination and highly developed consultation skills.
- Ability to exercise accurate and high-level judgment about industrial issues, including those with union-wide sensitivity or implications, commensurate with level of experience in the role.
- Can operate and deliver outcomes in a political environment and be flexible to adapt to changing priorities in high pressure situations to deliver outcomes.
- Proficient in Microsoft platforms and applications.
- Can build and maintain professional relationships with key stakeholder groups.
Relevant tertiary education:
A degree including industrial relations, or alternatively arts, law or other broad social sciences discipline is relevant. An alternative is an extensive number of years’ experience working directly in the specialist industrial relations field, augmented by diploma or continuing education-level studies in Industrial relations.
Desirable:
- Experience in related fields such as work as a Union Organiser, Industrial Research Officer or employment/IR lawyer.
- Prior working experience in the trade union movement is an additional benefit but not a requirement.
