Nurses and midwives from across NSW celebrated the beauty of birth with a captivating, head-turning spectacle, at tonight’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) members will don purple scrubs, which is the traditional colour of midwives, under the theme: ‘Born to be Free.’
NSWNMA President and midwife, O’Bray Smith, said this year’s display was sure to grab the public’s attention.
“We have designed an eye-catching float for tonight’s parade that symbolises the life-changing moment a baby is born into this world and the invaluable role midwives play in the birthing journey,” said Ms Smith.
“Mardi Gras is all about diversity, inclusion and embracing the LGBTQI+ community.
“As nurses and midwives, we fight for equal access to quality, non-discriminatory healthcare for all. It is a privilege to be a midwife and tonight we celebrate and thank the community for placing their trust in our professions.
“We are looking forward to promoting our universal health messages as we dance and sing our way up Oxford Street.”
2025 is the ninth year the NSWNMA has proudly participated in Mardi Gras to promote the importance of inclusion and social justice for the health and wellbeing of all Australians.
