Dressed in rainbow-striped scrubs, nurses, midwives and carers from across the state will proudly march in tonight’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
80 nurses and midwives from the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) will dance and cheer their way along Oxford Street, under the theme ‘Nurses and Midwives: the Heart of our Community.’
Members will use the prominent event to highlight the importance of each profession, and the role healthcare workers play in caring for diverse communities.
NSWNMA Assistant Secretary, Katrina Bough, said it was an honour to be involved in the 48th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade alongside more than 200 other floats.
“We are looking forward to coming together tonight in solidarity to celebrate and embrace our LGBTQIA+ community,” said Ms Bough.
“Mardi Gras is about promoting diversity, inclusion and social justice for the health and wellbeing of all Australians. As nurses, midwives and carers, we fight for equitable and inclusive healthcare for all.
“We are proud to be the backbone of our healthcare system and provide safe care to all, with kindness, compassion and respect.
“We can’t wait to hit Oxford Street and express our universal health messages through song and dance and highlight the proud history of Mardi Gras activism.”
2026 is the 10th year the NSWNMA has proudly participated in Mardi Gras.
