Nepali unions are organising immediate assistance in the wake of Saturday’s devastating earthquake and are calling for global union support. Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA is supporting the initiatives of General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) and Union Network Nepal Liaison Council (UNI NLC) to provide medical treatment for the injured, temporary tent housing and water and food supplies.
To donate online, go to ‘One off Donations’ (option C) and select ‘Nepal Earthquake Appeal’.
Whether large or small, every contribution counts in the effort to rebuild the lives of people in Nepal.
“Kathmandu valley is unimaginably destroyed! It is the most terrible quake we have ever experienced. Chilling cold, plus rain, lack of tents and [continuous] jolts is sufficient to scare people. It has disturbed even rescue work”- Bishnu Rimal, President, General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT)
A major 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April 2015 causing unprecedented destruction of infrastructure and homes, as well as loss of thousands of lives. We still do not know how many have perished because it will take time to reach the villages which have been reportedly levelled to the ground near the epicentre. Many world heritage buildings have been reduced to rubble. This is a huge disaster for one of the poorest nations, which was already struggling to improve the living standards of the poorest of the poor.
