Stop the Violence

Stop the Violence

Violence is not part of the job. Any form of violence or aggression towards nurses, midwives and carers is unacceptable and must stop.

The NSWNMA Occupational Violence: has no place in my workplace report found that 88% of nurses and midwives surveyed had experienced or witnessed violence and aggression in the last year and workplace violence was significantly underreported – only 25% report all incidents.

Violence doesn’t always leave a bruise – it includes behaviours such as verbal abuse and swearing and should always be reported even if no injury occurs. We know there are significant barriers to reporting incidents of violence and aggression, both cultural and practical, but your employer has a legal duty to protect you from the risk of occupational violence.

If you are assaulted, your employer must respond immediately, support you, and review controls to prevent it happening again. If you’re experiencing any form of violence at work, contact us for support.
